Bolsover Winter Illuminations (Junction Arts)
Over the past 10 years, Junction Arts has developed a successful lantern festival which has steadily evolved into an annual winter event.
The success of the festival encouraged Junction to consider other projects. After consultation with its local partners, Junction decided to focus on public art and environmental work and set its sights on the idea of winter illuminations. After a tender process, the commissioners chose the visual artist Ray Smith, one of whose works, the Teignmouth Illuminations, was the inspiration for the Bolsover initiative.
The work currently consists of 10 illuminations, based on community designs, in the centre of Bolsover. Funding has now been secured for a further seven illuminations on light columns and three cross street illuminations.
The concept of light sculpture and installations is unfamiliar to many people. ‘It wasn’t until people saw the completed project that they realised what playing with light was all about,’ says Tina Glover of Junction Arts. But, when they did, she adds, there was an overwhelmingly positive reaction.
