Decathlon (Q Arts)
Decathlon – Athens comes to Derby - August 2004
Taking inspiration from the Olympic Games, Q Arts commissioned artists to create work responding to the spirit of the Olympic movement. Relay celebrates their achievements in an exhibition and a day of decathlon events on the streets of Derby.
Participation in a fun Modern Art Relay slalom. Making an Olympic artwork. Joining in a procession heralded by an Art Olympic Flame and Derby artRelay team flags. The chaos of Ghaos by Reactor, and a dry land synchronized swimming performance ‘sync or swim’ led by dancers from Random Dance Company in collaboration with Derby Dance Centre.
On display were Decathlon sculptures, banners and flags created through a series of participatory arts events developed over recent months, exploring issues of identity, flags, sport, Greek sculpture, Olympic flame and opening ceremonies, through content and design.
An outdoor event led by Nottingham based artists Reactor, The Horse Drawn Ghaos involved a procession that arrived at the Market Place to the sound of sirens and instructions from megaphones. Audience members were given the option of joining the procession or setting up a testing ground in the Market Place. This is a procession with a difference. Polo mints, cardboard horses heads, whirligig music and huge top hats combine with an audience in lab coats. When the procession arrives there is work to be done…!
