Dresses and Smiles - Exhibition (Apna Arts)
Date: 29 April to 31 May 2002 - Venue: Art Exchange Gallery
'Dresses’‚ was an installation based on over patterning of the house the artist grew up in. Patterns within carpets, curtains and furniture, with a cacophony of colours and textures filtering into the culture, within the music, the writing, the food, and with all these aspects being multi-layered. ‘Smiles’ was a film of a journey between Loughborough and Nottingham. People were asked at random to smile and by seeing the face as a map of emotions we can see people’s ability to interact and communicate with the simple muscular function of a smile. ‘Dresses and Smiles’ represent repetition within everyday life, and explores how much can be overlooked due to perceived similarity in our everyday routines and experiences. Both pieces allowed us to look at things we my not have noticed.
To coincide with Dresses and Smiles, APNA Arts exhibited three established artists who have strong links with Nottingham and who have in their own way explored issues around the British Asian experience. These included Said Adrus, Bhajan Hunjan and Sardul Singh.
