The following questions were raised during the recent EMPAF Symposium (please see Symposium profile and resources pages for more info). We would like to know your views:

  1. Is community arts the same as participatory arts?
  2. Do we need a definition of community arts?
  3. Do we need a definition of participatory arts?

  • My view is still that participatory arts is a component of community arts - community arts organisations and community artists may engage in participatory arts practice but for me community arts practice embodies a wider agenda and approach.
  • I am also pretty convinced that we should start talking about collaborative arts to describe the more in depth work which is a more co-determinate process leading to outcomes with the people we work with.
  • Participatory and collaborative arts approaches each have a continuum from shorter to longer term workshops/projects/programmes. These in turn may also contribute to an overall approach which could be geared to wider aims/support to specific groups or holistic community development.
  • I don't think we need a definition - I think we need a full blown study of how to categorise the range of work and its prospective impacts AND an understanding of how the dynamics of these different elements can fit together in different ways. I am hoping that a recent partnership bid to the AHRC will allow some time out to look at this in greater depth and I would be really interested to hear views from others.
best wishes Kev
