Leicester Belgrave Mela - Call out for Artists’ Proposals 2010

We're looking for artists who are interested in exploring and developing ideas and themes of South Asian arts and culture at the annual Leicester Belgrave Mela festival on Sunday 18th July 2010.

Leicester Belgrave Mela is an outdoor, annual celebration of South Asian arts and culture which attracts around 30,000 people to Leicester city centre. Following a theme of Celebrating Diversity it will involve different art forms and also unite art forms to enhance imagination and explore the boundaries of the arts. This will result in genres of art being created for the general public and wider community to experience and actively engage with, which will endeavour to develop audiences for combined arts.

On the day of the festival the Mela Arts Zone will need both experienced and emerging artists to create a high quality piece of artwork, this can be created from any medium including sculpture, stories, puppetry, textiles, crafts, visual art and new media. This will need to be created on site throughout the day of the festival so the public can see the creation being developed.

Leading up to the Mela day you would be part of a programme of interactive and participatory workshops in schools and community centres in and around Leicestershire. These would run in the four weeks before the Mela and would involve 2 or 3 days of workshops which would give the opportunity for young people to create work, along the same themes as above, which can be exhibited at the Mela.
