Ladybrook Arts Strategy (Next Stage)
Next Stage has commissioned a consultant to develop an arts strategy for the Ladybrook estate in Mansfield.
Mansfield is the 29th most deprived district in England as defined by the index of multiple deprivation. Ladybrook is one of the seven Mansfield wards within the top 10% most deprived in England. It is a large Local Authority housing estate with a population of about 8,500. There is a very strong sense of community, with many people having lived on the estate since it was built.
Local people have expressed particular concerns around crime, lack of leisure facilities and youth facilities. A number of community groups are already active on the estate.
The strategy will provide a creative approach to community development through:
- providing clear steps for development to agreed targets
- developing creative consultation for community development between community members and partners
- addressing social issues through a strategic approach to arts programmes and initiatives (health, environmental improvements, crime reduction, and skills development)
- targeting young people and the elderly in arts activity
- providing support and development routes for community organisations
Some in progress initiatives:
- completed graffiti mural/mosaic for the outer wall of Ladybrook library (see images)
- issue based crafts workshops exploring themes of drug use
- creative consultation with dance for elderly residents
- street dance summer workshops
The strategy will be launched in October 2005.
The project is partnered by Neighbourhood Renewal Funds (NRF) and in conjunction with Ladybrook Management Team, Ladybrook Estate Action Group, The Turning Point information and advice centre, Roma Gee, Mansfield District Council and the community of Ladybrook.
