Light upon Light - Barbara Rasheed Exhibition (Apna Arts)
Date: April 22 to May 17 2003 - Venue: The Art Exchange
To coincide with Saleem Arif Quandri’s exhibition ‘Sensual Songs of Sacred Places’, a local artist Barbara Rasheed installed her piece using light, glass, Islamic patterns and reflections within an enclosed space.
“In terms of ideas, impulses and inspirations, this piece has been in the making for many years now. It is a progression for my search for the “sacred” and the exploration of nature and time.
It is a culmination of my interests in the concept of eternal life, the repetitive, rhythmic and organic nature of patterns, and the use of light in all matters sacred and godly.
The idea of a singular pillar, lit by a very bright singular point was a later addition inspired by the monolithic shapes found in ancient religious sites. Rotation about this pillar is synonymous with the religious practice of many eastern religions in which devotees walk around monolithic structures, their repetitive circling signifying eternal life or eternal journey.
I would have very much like to have built this piece on a far grander scale, in which the central pillar would have dwarfed an adult and possibly rotated or hovered too, but limited resources have meant the piece is much smaller.
I hope the installation will still allow the visitor to experience the feeling of being bathed in bright white light, and sense the creation of shadows as they walk around the column repeatedly.”
