Net:Reality - Exhibition (Q Arts)
23 July – 29 October 2005
A show of new media artworks for the physical gallery space and live internet art will be hosted by 20-21 Visual Arts Centre in Scunthorpe and Q Arts in Derby.
Blurring the boundary between the physical gallery space and live work on the web, Net:Reality promises to merge the ethereal notions of cyber space with the aesthetics of a physical exhibition. Seven artists have been selected for the exhibition as key practitioners engaged in Internet based working. Each artist has been commissioned to create a new artwork that exists both virtually and physically.
The artists in Net:Reality have created varied and interactive work that deals with broad ranging and global issues; Michael Magruder’s piece tackles the iconic nature of mass media and global communication by digitally distorting ‘front pages’ of international editions of the BBC internet news service to create stunningly beautiful political live 'digital paintings'. Stanza's The emotional state of the ‘metropolis’ is a project about the subvergence of surveillance. 'CCTV systems are everywhere in the public domain. We are all actors, bit-part actors, in a giant movie called life. Except we cannot watch, it is not on public display and the results are monitored, filtered and distributed without our permission'. IDphone, by Simon Biggs, is a play on I.D. (cards, biometrics) and the Freudian notion of the Id alongside the use of video phones (gone wrong). In contrast, Jessica Loseby's Position/Disposition is a continuation of investigations into the absurd compatibility between the digital and the domestic, contrasting the cyber age with her role as a mother.
Rather than having a ‘theme’ for the artworks, the common denominator is the media used and the relationship between web based work and ‘real’ physical space. The web will be harnessed to investigate ideas that are often socially aware, politically active, humorous, engaging and even fun. The artworks have an aesthetic and interactive quality; allowing participants to enjoy or engage in them without having any prior knowledge of computer programming, net art or IT skills.
20-21 Visual Arts Centre has been working with the local Ashby Link Adult Education and Multi Media Centre. Net:Reality artist Michael Magruder ran a two-day workshop with basic skills tutors and students to produce a series of artworks. These new works will be shown within the exhibition at 20-21 and six adult education centres in North Lincolnshire. In addition there will be a series of workshops, led by Net:Reality artists at the centre. Q Arts is working with a group of refugees and asylum seekers based in Derby and the East Midlands. Through a series of workshops delivered by an artist from Net:Reality and Q Arts, developing creative internet skills to produce an internet artwork exhibited during the Net Reality tour.
Net:Reality is supported by Arts Council England and curated by Michael Magruder, 20-21 Visual Arts Centre, Scunthorpe and Q Arts Derby. The net-based work is available throughout the touring period at: www.net-reality.org
