PARTHIV SHAH - Filmaking Residency (Charnwood Arts)
Charnwood Arts welcomed film maker, photographer and cultural worker Parthiv Shah to undertake a residency of projects and activities in the Charnwood area. Parthiv, a native Gujarati but now living in Delhi also worked with local people on developing a book and exhibition recording views and expressions of the South Asian Diaspora. This exhibition has been seen all over India.
Parthiv's first visit brought us a showing of two of his documentary films exploring the art of two Indian village artists and both local and international reaction to them. We also exhibited Parthiv's latest photographic work, a sensitive and powerful documentary of Ahmedabad's redundant mill workers.
Parthiv's second visit, a longer residency, resulted in a short documentary video about the local hosiery industry, a community project to produce an installation at Loughborough University and lenghty interviews on Sabras Radio.
The illustration above shows a page from Charnwood Artslink with a giant painting from the installation based on one of Parthiv's photographs. The smaller images are from Parthiv's Ahmedabad exhibition which has recently toured internationally.
While Parthiv was in Loughborough we interviewed the last sock makers at Towells one of the earliest and one of the last industrialised hosiery makers in the region. Shortly after the factory closed for ever.
