The SEND project were asked to deliver a weekly Graffiti art project for 8-10 young people participating in an alternative education project at the Boyzee community centre in Scraptoft, Leicester. The project ran every Tuesday for five weeks from the 12th January, where a group of young people from all around Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire were taught spraypainting techniques on canvasses by Mykee and Boy.
The young people had to do some Internet research into the history of graffiti and stencil art, and compile some photos and information on a small number of their favourite graffiti artists and their work. They were given a short intensive workshop in designing and cutting a stencil for their painting along with health & safety on using craft knives, and were then taught different painting techniques and effects using spray paint on mount boards and canvasses.
After a day of painting, they were introduced to using special paint pens and given another short intensive workshop in lettering design and drawing. The young people were very enthusiastic and cooperative for the whole course and produced some excellent pieces of work to take home!!
We at the SEND project would like to give a massive thank you to the young people for attending and taking part, and to Wendy and Fahim for organizing and overseeing the project!
