The EMPAF National Symposium - 31st March 2009

On 31st March 2009, EMPAF brought together leaders and directors of UK participatory and community arts organisations for a lively one day symposium to consider the value of networking and explore issues of leadership and peer support within the sector.

Involving a range of activities and discussion opportunities, attendees considered a range of topics from whether there was a difference between community and participatory arts to the issues of Leadership; Strategic Alliances; Influencing and Advocacy and Quality. These discussions are being used to inform further EMPAF and partners' activities and the forthcoming EMPAF conference, details of which can be found through the main EMPAF profile on this site.

The day included two specially commissioned poetry performances by Rob Gee, one prepared in advanced on issues identified through questionnaires sent to all invitees and one created on the day based upon discussions.

A report of the event and its outcomes has been prepared and this, together with Rob’s poems and copies of the questionnaire responses, will be available to view or download from the the Resources section of this website by the end of June 2009.

Over 150 people were invited to Symposium, identified through existing contacts and research. However, if you are a leader, director or CEO of a participatory or community arts organisation and did not receive an invite but would like to know about future EMPAF events of this kind, please email us at
