------------------------
"Write Home Soon," by Mark Strandquist, is an ongoing project that bridges public installation and social practice methods. The Art Museum of the America's, Washington Project for the Arts, and curator Raquel de Anda recently selected the project to be exhibited along with three other Washington area artists for the AMA's upcoming 2012-13 exhibit "Ripple Effect." The four- month exhibit showcases work that aims to incorporate viewers as direct participants, addresses pressing social issue, and blurs the boundary between artistic practice and social engagement.
Strandquist's project includes ten interactive public installations, city-wide workshops, and an exhibition of participant created post-cards depicting spaces that individuals have lost in their lifetime, which will be mailed to the museum, and exhibited from October, 2012 to February 2013.
The city-wide workshops act simultaneously as a forum to discuss the idea and importance of ‘third places,’ psychic geography, and healthy ways to construct and utilize personal, public and political spaces, as well as provide a chance for individuals to learn about the Write Home Soon project and complete a postcard.
The project democratizes ideas and actions surrounding the creation and curation of art, history, etc...What would our museums and libraries look like if they reflected the realities and visions of all the DC metro area?
All postcards created in the workshops will be included in the Museum exhibition as well as an ongoing online database. All participation is anonymous, the idea being, these spaces and memories, can/could stand in for any of us.
Workshop / partner locations include prisons, homeless shelters, libraries, mental health clinics, studios for disabled artists, public housing developments, Arts for the Aging, Habitats for Artists, DC Arts Center, Civilian Art Projects, Space of Her Own, Books to Prisoners, Free Minds, Miriam’s Kitchen, a variety of local Universities, art centers, and independent galleries, and more.
If you, or a group / organization you work with would like to participate in the exhibition, or host a postcard making workshop, please send emails to:
