Relay - Exhibition (Q Arts)
Taking inspiration from the Olympic Games, Q Arts commissioned artists to create work responding to the spirit of the Olympic movement. RELAY brought together their creative responses in a programme of events, sitings and an exhibition exploring the idea of RELAY as game, transmission, circuit, consequence or sports event, using film, animation, Internet and performance.
Relay Exhibition Artists:
Adele Prince, Elle Harrison, Veronique Chance, Jos Boys, Reactor, Linda Young, Faye Chamberlain, Young People from NOSch and Q Club, Daley Thompson’s Decathlon
The exhibition wrestles between visual perspiration and endurance, personal bests, the competitive struggle of the mundane, where taking part is what matters! Taking inspiration from the unusual and unexpected activities people pursue as sport the exhibition features photography focussing on a competition for space on a park bench; the ‘knock on effect’ of a photo domino game; and works examining the reality of exercise, the glamour of fitness exposed. Films explore the choreography of sport as performance, by reflecting on the politics of physical ideals or the glamour of synchronized swimming.
Two online projects consider how luck is passed on via a ‘lucky penny’ global relay; and how fun, simple actions lead to momentous achievements over time: how long would it take you to ice skate to the North Pole, drink a bath full of beer or walk around the world? Collaborative works created by artists and young people, explore the relay theme of sports that aren’t included in the Olympics, using digital animation.
