RURT? & APNE Raang (Apna Arts)
Date: 1-10 October December 2002
RURT? Was a major new audience research and development project led by APNA Arts with partners: Angel Row gallery, Nottingham, Nottingham Asian Arts Council, City gallery, Leicester and the Leicester Belgrave Mela.
The project was funded by ACE’s ‘New Audience programme’ and aimed to develop new South Asian audiences for visual arts and craft in Nottingham and Leicester.
The project had particular emphasis upon attracting young South Asian audiences aged between 16 – 24 to experience a range of visual arts and craft within the gallery setting as well as other spaces and environments.
APNA Arts realised during the research with focus groups of young people that visual arts was a low priority and often misunderstood by young South Asian people.
However, film and lens based media was a medium that young people could relate to. It was also noted that the best way to introduce young people to visual arts was to either deliver visual arts projects in environments already frequented by young people or use a popular art form as a marketing toll to attract young people into the gallery. APNA Arts also decided to incorporate RURT? into a wider festival which profiled music, dance, comedy, theatre, galas, club nights as well as visual arts events and workshops. The festival, APNE Raang, was publicised through twenty thousand brochures and fliers.
