Sensual Songs of Sacred Space - Saleem Arif Quadri Exhibition (Apna Arts)
Date: April 22 to May 17 2003 - Venue: The Art Exchange
Saleem Arif Quadri returned to Nottingham to exhibit his most recent works: “Sensual Songs of Sacred Space” recent works on paper (in series) inspired by the long avenues of New York and dedicated to all the innocent victims of the atrocious attacks in New York and Washington on September the 11th.
Saleem has exhibited widely in the UK and abroad and has a vast experience of teaching and artist residences. Painting, Photography, Printmaking, Manuscript books, Ceramics and Drawing are all mediums that he utilises towards the unfolding of visual ideas. “Sensual Songs of Sacred Space” consisted of past and recent works both large and small on wood and paper, as well as prints and photographs.
“The concept of a juncture, in this case the meeting point of internal and external, is fundamental to the work of Saleem Arif Quadri. He believes that the edges of his paintings are touching a universal and unique space and creating a whole. The shapes within the paintings are devoid of indulgent information. They are pure ‘shape’. Identifying them as a shape of a specific object would be blasphemous. The imagery is left ambiguous. The Islamic doctrine of not portraying in imitation of God remains important to him, although the pictoral content of his work is identifiable” - as stated by Amal Gosh in the publication ‘Beyond Frontiers’
