Shaanti Clubnight projections (RURT?) (Apna Arts)
APNA Arts delivered a project whereby lens based artwork was projected at a club nights in October/November 02.
The first club night was a high profile event as part of Radio One’s live in Nottingham week (mainstream event) and the launch of the Radio One’s first Asian show with Bobby Friction. DJ’s performing included Punjabi MC, Bobby Friction and Badmarsh. The second club night took place at the Social with the Dum Dum project with Renu Ladyfingers (Sister India).
The projects was a perfect opportunity to explore avenues for developing young South Asian audiences appreciation of contemporary visual arts in an alternative space already used by young South Asian people.
The digital films produced included:
An experimental film by Ana Bhogal and Champa Patel
Ana and Champa photographed young people from Nottingham and translated this into a DVD of animated images for projection at the club nights.
This looped film reflected an interest within the urban fashion world.
Bollywood Dance by Said Adrus
International artist Said Adrus was commissioned to produce a digitally manipulated loop of a Bollywood dancer.
His video ‘On the Spot’ commissioned by the Bonnington Gallery was also projected.
Said’s digital images translated well in a club environment with clichéd or iconic images of Asia overlapped with searching self-portraits.
Forbidden Nights – Mona Media
Mona Media was commissioned to produce a short film from a script produced by a young Asian girl.
Young people were taken through all aspects of film production and lead the direction of the project through steering groups.
The process included drama/writing workshops, pre production, production and postproduction.
The film was a story of frustration and fantasy as a young girl fantasised about a romantic night out at a club.
As in Cinderella, her ‘ugly’ brothers’ forbid her to go to the ball.
But through the Internet she finds herself in an imaginary nightclub and meets the man of her dreams…and all goes well until her guilt takes over and she imagines her brothers’ response.
