Three Simple Statements – Mural Banner (Apna Arts)
This banner was painted by Nadeem Haider & David Thomas, as part of the Heritage Marquee at the 1993 APNA Arts National Festival Of Asian Arts & Music.
The idea was inspired by a short story written by the leading Urdu writer: Saadat Hasan Manto. The story is a critical commentary on the political divisions between the Muslims & Hindus bought on by the colonial divide and rule policy.
These ‘divisions’ are a common theme running through the visual imagery of the banner.
The first section of the banner, taken from a photograph by Nadeem, is of a young girl and her brother.
The expression on her face is one of Pride & Defiance. Cutting through the image, however, is a superimposed map of Pakistan symbolising the psychological impact of bringing in the existence of Pakistan on the 14th August 1947.
The second section takes the theme of the maps further. The painting shows the Subcontinent not in the real sense but a collage of past and present. Also superimposed on the map are segments of Britain, America, Russia and China. This not only reminds us of the Subcontinents colonial past but also its geographical importance to the modern superpowers.
The final section shows a painting of a destitute man, again taken from a photograph by Nadeem. The expression on his face also is of Pride & Defiance, but his extreme poverty is highlighted by the posters below him of ‘TOURIST’ India; the splendours of the Taj Mahal and the exotic attractions of the east.
